Media Centre PC –  CPU Heatsink Reseating (Video – Scroll down)

This media centre PC had booting issues due to hard drive failure. Added to this the PC randomly rebooted, upon further investigation the CPU appeared to be running a higher than expected temperature while idle. This may indicate bad surface contact between CPU and heatsink. We will have to remove and reseat applying thermal compound as thermal bridge across surfaces.

There may be occasion to remove the heatsink either to install a new CPU or heatsink. In either case, a degree of care should be adhered. Pay close attention to the correct position of the processor, getting it round the wrong way will result in the most heart sinking of feelings. If you find yourself in this situation, and unlucky, the pins may become bent or damaged. Furthermore, any voltage difference may cause irreparable electrical damage to the motherboard and or CPU. Be gentle in positioning the CPU in its correct position and be gentle.

To add to the concern, you should not re-use the heatsink paste from the old CPU or heatsink. Always apply adequate heatsink paste.

Watch this example video below demonstrating how I removed a heatsink, cleaned thermal paste off and removed the CPU

Here you will see how I replace the CPU and applied thermal paste

The pitfalls of buying software on EBay

offers, discounts and news 01
Image 1

I want to share a short story about buying on EBay. A few days ago a client wanted to buy Office Professional 2010. A seller with many years trading and with 100% feedback on several thousand sales. What could go wrong?? Well, everything, the License number, despite authentic looking with security seals was counterfeit Microsoft told them. Fortunately Paypal handled the transaction and so there is a good ending. EBay on the other hand – although it was through EBay, the sale was under their gift buy instant purchase, so YOU have no way to come back to EBay for justice despite buying through their site. Bottom line, DO NOT BUY SOFTWARE through EBay, try a reputable seller.

An error has been detected on my PC. Is it a scam?

We get many calls about this every month, but it can’t hurt to repeat that this is simply a scam and most certainly not Microsoft calling.

Microsoft Scam

Allowing a stranger access to your computer or online passwords can have dia consequences

including theft of your identity and your money. Microsoft will never call you like this and you

should never allow access to your PC or give out any passwords to anyone who calls you claiming

to have detected an error on your computer. Hang up!.

We have heard how a PC owner had a call  purportedly from Microsoft where they locked down the

owners computer with a password – which, of course, will only be provided on payment of a fee. If

this has happened to you, we recommend turning off your computer and getting a trusted repair

technician, who will  be able to back up and restore all of your data, while ensuring no back doors

have been left which might allow the scammers re-entry into your system.
